Brown-headed Spider monkey

Brown-headed Spider monkeys live in Ecuador and are critically endangered. These mammals give birth only every 3-4 years, and with the additional pressures of logging and hunting, their population has drastically declined to less than 500 individuals. They are now on the IUCN’s list of the 25 most threatened primate species.

The Canandé Reserve in Ecuador provides a safe haven for 65% of the remaining population. The spider monkeys stay in the high canopy and play a vital role in the biodiversity of the tropical forest. Due to their fruit-based diet, these monkeys disperse the seeds of around 138 tree species, maintaining forest diversity.

The Canandé Reserve is managed by local conservation partner Fundación Jocotoco, an Ecuadorian conservation group with a proven track record of success in species programs.
